The Art of Astrology in Practice – Approaching Chart Interpretation

Learning and practicing astrology prompted the great William Lilly to declare “Ars longa, vita brevis” (“art is long, life is short”) – reflecting a centuries-old challenge of making sense from much information. For, no matter our level of experience, reading any chart asks to see a singular map with fresh eyes whilst consistently drawing on complex knowledge from ancient tradition. So what is foundational to the analysis? Where can core understanding begin? And how is key information drawn to the foreground?

In exploring such questions, this Intensive is about putting astrology into the initial practice of creating a primary perspective – as gaining a coherent framework then extends to the variety of individual topical issues and life experiences. In aim of ‘doing astrology’, discussion will include the essential nature of delineation and scoping out temperamental factors. Practical techniques will be reviewed and principles applied by working with different birthchart examples.

a slow motion crash and the hermetic lots

A week’s a long time in global financial markets – one might wonder whether we are watching a slow motion crash… yet again…
Didn’t “they” fix that already?
Oh, that’s right, money was splashed around, the greatest daylight robbery of all time audaciously accomplished, heads buried in the sand, and back to business as usual with the collective memory span of an amoeba.
And Australian property is the only market to keep rising forever – the perpetual money-making machine …

From an astrological perspective the correlated synodic cycles currently appear to be Saturn opposite Uranus along with Jupiter opposite Saturn – a double whammy!
The traditional great Chronocrators, Jupiter and Saturn, were last together in Taurus in 2000 (remember the “tech wreck”, the unfortunate election of George Bush and a US50c Australian dollar), which incidentally was their last mutation in Earth signs, the predominating element since the early 19th century  (read capitalist industrial materialism).
We are now in the halfway crisis point of this most recent 20 year cycle.
The seeds and roots of our current circumstances lie back there at the start of this century.
Now we bear witness to the fruits of our labours and the consequences of our actions and decisions.
Are we optimists or pessimists, idealists or realists, happy or sad, bulls or bears, fish or fowl …?? Both/neither??
A turning point/tipping point has no doubt been reached.
“Curiouser and curiouser” as Alice was given to saying once she’d fallen into her looking glass world.

This month we have the delight of presenting what Robert Zoller once termed “The lost keys of prediction”. These are the Hellenistic Hermetic Lots.
Formerly known as Arabic parts, their more ancient and original heritage has been rediscovered, probably stemming from the Hermetic philosophies and horoscopic practices of the early centuries BCE.
They reveal inner workings and dynamics of a birthchart, with special reference to fate and destiny, and to specific life t0pics such as luck, fortune, fame, success, happiness, friendship and health.
If you’re intrigued by these underlying symbolisms which add a whole new essential dimension to reading charts, please join us on Tuesday evening.

Throughout 2010 the Astrology Project Intensives will only be presented on the Gold Coast:

Gold Coast Intensive:
Intensive 11 - will be presented on the Gold Coast – Tuesday 25th May at 7pm in the Southport Community Centre

May 25 – The Hermetic Lots – Fortuna, Spirit, & Planetary Points
The very old doctrine of the seven Hermetic Planetary Lots had a remarkably key significance in ancient astrology. They were calculated points integrating vital primary factors, plumbing the chart surface to reveal further meaning that would have otherwise remained hidden. Overlooked into modern day, these lost horoscopic dimensions now offer a further refinement and sophistication which is open to interesting rediscovery. The objective of this intensive is to explore the unique nature, workings, and use of an intriguing underlying symbolic network.

Please register your intention to attend by email or phone as soon as possible. See contact details below.
Each intensive session is $40 or $35 for GCAS/QFA/FAA members.
A copy of the intensive presentation is emailed to each participant for later personal review.

the mother of all retrogrades

In true Mercury/Hermes retrograde style this monthly intensive reminder is late…

Well you’d be forgiven for thinking this has been the mother of all retrogrades, with total closure of UK/European air space – right on cue. Not to mention the recent shock/horror/surprise revelation(!!) that NRL club Storm has been cheating, and that there is corruption and deceit at the core of associated gambling…. Will wonders never cease?

Venus/Aphrodite and Mercury are deeply entwined by sign. The best of this period may be about to conclude when Venus, currently strong in her own place as the domicile lord of Mercury in Taurus, lapses into peregrine status as she moves ahead into Gemini. Thoughtful reflections on the true nature of personal happiness give way to renewed petty distractions masquerading as “reality”. With both planets in mutual reception, you have to wonder what they really have to offer each other just now….

The quietly significant event of the period is Saturn/Cronos creeping back into Virgo, under the auspices of Mercury. What are we good at? What can we do well? What do we really know? How can we put any/all of this to use? Does knowledge serve or burden us? Where are we going and why?

And the trickster becoming combust while getting caught up in the crossfire between Sun/Helios square Mars/Ares only serves to inflame an already incendiary potential . Hammer those nails rather than bashing your head against a wall, or stay chill and get a few cooking pointers from master chef… or the cosmic equivalent. That special Sun/Mercury cazimi moment occurs 2-3am 29 April here – sweet dreams!

So here at the project we turn our attention to the supernal transcendent planetary realm in search of divine clues. This month is all about the shining star Helios, and the orbits of his attendant stars, reflecting his majesty and subject to his reign. Even in our neck of the woods, “sun sign” astrology is alive and well, albeit with a different sensibility. This intensive will help your comprehension of retrogradation, inferior/superior planets, morning/evening stars, and oriental/occidental status.

Throughout 2010 the Astrology Project Intensives will only be presented on the Gold Coast:

The Sun King – Solar Alignments in a Nativity
Just as it is vital to all life in the solar system, the Sun is a central feature of any chart. Each of the other planets has its special relationship to the “king”, and this is further observed in their relative motions and visual appearances. Movement and light, orientality and occidentality, rising, culminating, and setting, were always keenly attended to. There is a wealth of techniques to explore. Using knowledge from astrology’s Hellenistic origins, this intensive is aimed at describing these mechanics, learning their meaning, and appreciating their relevance.
